I’ve always had a passion for boats and the sea, starting out surfing in Woolacombe and Croyde with my parents at an early age. Some time later my dad bought a ‘Mirage 28’ yacht called St George and moored it down in Gosport, every weekend rain or shine we would go down to the boat and sail around the Solent, across to Cowes, Yarmouth and back again, I loved the planning, checking the weather forecast, the tides and plotting a course on the chart, also the feeling of leaving your mooring and heading off to a new port or harbour, anchoring up and swimming in the sea, as I got older this usually involved a few beers and some hot food at the local Yacht club and if there was a pool table, even better.
As time moved on, I bought my first yacht at the age of 38, a Westerly Centaur, I spent months refurbishing her and even had it resprayed, I named it after my newborn daughter ‘Izzy Rose’, and my dad and I launched her from NOS Marina, Dartmouth, on the 20th April 2010, I remember that date as it was my daughters first birthday, over the years I’ve been reminded many times, how I missed her first birthday to go and play with boats, I’ve never lived it down…
Understanding how to skillfully navigate a powerboat and having a deep awareness of marine environments are crucial not only for the safety of those on board but also for preserving the delicate balance of our marine ecosystems.
